Nigeria’s 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying campaign suffered another blow after a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe on Sunday afternoon. Entering their second 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, Zimbabwe and Nigeria were both coming off draws in their previous games.
The teams faced off at Stade Huye, eager to secure crucial three points to stay competitive in Group C, especially after South Africa’s 2-1 victory over Benin on Saturday.
Zimbabwe had an ideal start, securing a 26th-minute goal from Walter Musona, which they successfully maintained going into half-time.
However, in the 67th minute, the Super Eagles scored as Kelechi Iheanacho's left-footed shot from the centre of the box secured the equalising goal.
Iheanacho grabbed GOAL’s Man of the Match for his equaliser, which saved the Super Eagles from embarrassment. In the Top Players & Ratings section, Iheanacho earned an 85.0 rating for his contribution to the match, which saw him come on as a substitute.
Zimbabwe's head coach, Baltemar Brito, emerges as the day's victor for his strategic tactics and game approach, effectively outplaying Nigeria and securing a draw.
Despite being a formidable team in Africa, Nigeria has been unsuccessful in winning their first two matches in the qualifiers, resulting in them currently holding the status of today's losers.
Presently occupying the second spot in Group C, the Super Eagles trail Bafana Bafana by a single point.
The two top teams are set to face each other on June 3 in Nigeria, with the Super Eagles aiming to surpass the South Africans on their home ground.
